The Social Communication and Journalism Major at the University of Quindío has its origins in a proposal presented by the B.A. in Spanish and Literature Major and the Educational Technology Major professorate, about the feasibility of having such an academic program that would also serve corporate and journalistic interests.
As a consequence of the initiative of these two majors, a consolidation of the project surfaced. Professors María Isabel Carvajal Bejarano and Nelson José Murillo Vélez officially made the proposal. 
The Social Communication and Journalism Major was finally approved and set in motion by the Academic Council and by Nelson José Murillo Vélez (who, at the time, was the Faculty of Humanities dean) through Agreement No. 134, December 18, 1996.
The major’s mission is to train professionals who demonstrate integral values and attitudes, as well as a capacity for leadership. They develop information management skills by way of applying social-cognitive model methodologies, thus becoming agents of true change and addressing current societal information needs. 
This program will be an excellent educational alternative. It will offer a prestigious curriculum that is in concordance with national development, journalistic and media communication needs. It will also train competent professionals who will be educated on how to better envision their future lives in terms of economic and household satisfying conditions, as well as their own humanistic, social and cultural viewpoint that will ultimately contribute to the progress and evolution of their environment.
Social Communicator – Journalist.
The Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Quindío contributes its communicative, prudent, responsible and professional in search of truth and the common good in any social environment action. 
It has a humanistic education and basic knowledge of the social sciences that allow you to develop a contextualized practice, in line with reality and supported by knowledge and respect of one's human dimensions. 
Has research training that allows you to investigate the causes and understand the consequences of local, national and international issues, thereby achieving acquire the elements necessary to guide public opinion and be a promoter of the public dialogue. 
Meet the conceptual foundations of their profession and the characteristics of the media at various dynamic work settings, which allows you to be part of interdisciplinary teams work, generating added value from their area of expertise. 
Develops content for mass media: print, audiovisual and digital, using different formats and genres, narrative and journalistic, with ethical, aesthetic and creative sense. 
Designs and implements strategies for mass dissemination of content, corporate or public focal lifted and therefore you can develop your career from journalism, organizational communication, political communication and communication for development. 
Meet own technological tools and resources of contemporary communication environment and smugly used in the development of their professional duties. 
Has the ability to take advantage of multimedia scenarios and scenarios of collaborative communications and social networking, to the development and strengthening of their profession and to promote truth and the common good. 
That is, our graduates is the ability to generate and apply knowledge from skills acquired on identification, planning, identification and conflict mediation in professional and social exercise, in addition to critical readings of historical and contemporary context, which analyze, interpret and question the events and processes of symbolic and social local, national and international environment representations.
The Social Communication – Journalist will have the skills to perform in:
The journalistic field in general: Editor, correspondent, coordinator, style corrector, head of department and newspaper, magazine and other such press media director. They can also perform as journalists for audiovisual media.
Communication companies and micro-businesses: Creator and innovator of information and corporate media.
Audiovisuals (radio, television, cinema and video): Director, coordinator, producer, manager, filmmaker and director for national, regional and local channels, audiovisual production companies, commercial and cultural radio stations and teaching tool creator.
Private or public organizational communication: Communications manager, communication department manager, PR manager, publicity and marketing department director, brand image consultant, event planner and printed material designer.
